Elvis Presley and Christmas (by Jeff Schrembs All Rights Reserved)

WM Christmas Card

The photograph above is a very rare Christmas card from Elvis and his infamous home…Graceland. This Christmas card is one of many that I have but it is among my favorite(s). There is no doubt that Elvis was proud of Graceland and loved spending Christmas there.

Christmas, and the weeks leading up to, was Elvis’ favorite time of the year. He loved the decorations, the smiles on others faces, the gracious acts of people during this time of year, buying presents for others, reflecting back on the year and looking forward to the next, and most of all having; friends, loved ones, relatives, etc. with him to share memories – love – time and more.

To those who were able to look upon Graceland, especially from the years of 1966 through 1973, the tasteful decorations – the lights – and the beauty would literally cause cars passing by to brake and the passengers look in wonder. It was a beautiful sight to behold and Elvis took great pride in illuminating Graceland and he never grew tired of driving through the gates of Graceland winding up towards his home looking at the spectacle of lights.

Even during the saddest Christmas of his life, which was Christmas of 1958 as his mother had died a few months earlier on August 14, 1958, Elvis still found the time to think about others and try to make it a special time…for others.

Interestingly, though Elvis is the most successful recording artist ever (note: in many categories including pertaining to Christmas songs (i.e. total album sales, total single sales, number of hits on Billboard, etc.) the music playing at Elvis’ home were those of other artists such as; Dean Martin, Gene Autry, Bing Crosby, and others.

Here is a summary of Elvis’ Christmas Songs: Elvis recorded his first Christmas album in sessions of September 5 – 7, 1957 at Radio Recorders in Hollywood entitled “Elvis’ Christmas Album” and was released in October 1957. Content included Christmas hymns, secular Christmas songs and non-holiday gospel numbers. It initially hit #1 for 4 weeks on Billboard’s pop album chart and revisited the chart due to strong sales in subsequent holiday seasons through 1962. It was repackaged with a new cover in 1958. There were other reissues with altered content and cover later on.

Working the sessions with Elvis were Scotty Moore (guitar), Bill Black (bass), D. J. Fontana (drums), Dudley Brooks (piano), and backing vocalists The Jordanaires and Millie Kirkham. These sessions were Millie’s first work with Elvis, who, ever the gentleman, took special care to see to her comfort because she was seven months pregnant at the time.

Millie performed a soprano obbligato (in a “winter wind” sort of effect) behind Elvis’ lead on the song “Blue Christmas”, a song that over the years would become synonymous with Elvis and Christmas. During the session, song writers Leiber and Stoller wrote for Elvis a song called “Christmas Blues”. By the end of the session it was renamed “Santa Claus Is Back In Town” and it became another famous Elvis Christmas song. Material unrelated to the Christmas album was also recorded at these sessions.

Elvis recorded a second Christmas album called “Elvis Sings The Wonderful World of Christmas” in sessions of May 15 -21, 1971 at RCA Studio B in Nashville. It was released October of 1971. Players were James Burton (guitar), Chip Young (guitar), Charlie Hodge (guitar), Norbert Putnam (bass), Jerry Carrigan (drums), Larry Londin (drums), Kenneth Buttrey (drums), David Briggs (piano), Imperials member Joe Moscheo (piano), Elvis Presley (piano), Glen Spreen (organ), and Charlie McCoy (organ, harmonica and percussion). Backing vocalists were The Imperials, June Page, Millie Kirkham, Ginger Holiday and Temple Riser. For this album producer Felton Jarvis attempted to set the Christmas mood in May by having the studio decorated with a tree and empty boxes beautifully wrapped. Elvis even brought gifts for everyone, presenting each with engraved gold bracelets that said “Elvis ’71”.

I hope that you enjoyed this article and may God bless you all.

August 16, 2012 Elvis Presley died 35 years ago (by Jeff Schrembs)

In a few weeks (i.e. August 16, 2012) Elvis fans worldwide will pay their respects in various ways in remembrance of Elvis death of August 16, 1977. To certain individuals (i.e. Lisa Marie, Red West, Sonny West, Marty Lacker, Joe Esposito, Jerry Schilling, etc.) this day will be one of heartfelt reflection as they lost someone they; knew, loved, and in may ways looked up to. Our thoughts, and prayers, go out to each of them.
The events of August 16, 1977 and the weeks following were a plethora of emotions; depression, uncontrollably crying, denial, hurt, despondent, angry, and most of all the questions of…”why”. Why did Elvis die? The answer to that question has been debated, speculated, and discussed for decades now.
The facts are that the weeks of August 1977 were days that Elvis spent worrying, planning, self reflecting, and dealing with the very real (and serious) medical issues (i.e. mental, physical, emotional, etc.). Sadly Elvis  health had deteriorated  since 1972.
Many people point out that this was due to his divorce/separation or the knowledge that his mother had died in August of 1958 (and he thought she was 42 the same age that Elvis was during August of 1977) or the tolls of constant touring. I believe that it was a combination of factors and that he had a broken heart further damaged by the knowledge that his beloved Lisa Marie was to grow up separated (physically) away from Elvis. This was a “nightmare” that Elvis had never believed possible and it adversely affected him in immeasurable ways.
However, I believe the answer to “why did Elvis die?” was that God determined it was his time.
I know making this statement will “offend some” but as a man of God I never expound on the “whys and ifs” but instead on the life the person lead – their accomplishments – their dreams – their hopes – their passions – their fears – their loves – their efforts – and their circle of family/friends, etc.
August 16, 1977 was a sad day for me yet as I type these words I am saddened when I learn that people who loved Elvis, and Elvis loved them, are under attack in stead of being acknowledged, supported, respected, and still do not have a “formal and consistent presence” within EPE.
While August 16th will be a day that Elvis Presley Fans Worldwide will remember it is my hope that they, and generations to come, will honor the life that Elvis lead the other 364 days of the year. For Elvis shared his passions, his talents, and his hopes and dreams with the world and we are better off for it. There is a beauty and an honor in what Elvis did and the life lesson that he achieved so much being born (monetarily) into so “little” is a story of inspiration.
I hope that other Elvis Presley Fans Worldwide will support the sentiments specified herein and join me in celebrating the life of Elvis Presley…and those who were integral parts of his life who still remain with us.
Take care and may God bless you.

Elvis Presley’s birthday on January 8, 2012 he would be 77 years old (by Jeffrey Schrembs)

Sunday, January 8, 2012 will be the 77th birthday of Elvis Aron Presley. It is simultaneously a day worthy of acknowledging and a day of sadness as it reminds us; what we lost when Elvis died on August 16 1977 and that our firsthand witness to greatness/history would be…no more.

On this day I say to the Presley Family, EPE, Marty Lacker, Red West, Sonny West, Sandi Pichon, Billy Smith, Joe Esposito, Jerry Schilling, etc. and to their family members; THANK YOU and may God bless you in all of your endeavors.

I have always believed that what we do in this life has direct consequences when our life is over. That we are not constrained by our physical presence herein this World. That our essence is defined by our very soul which is our true “compass” to what is right, what is wrong, and what is true.

With that in mind I know that where ever Elvis is that he is surrounded by those who loved him, gave birth to him, were related to him, and befriended him. I have always wished that time could be “rewound” so that Elvis truly knew, in this spirit and in his soul, the impact he made on people’s lives and how much they cared for him and appreciated what he did onstage and off. Some of my favorite stories, photos, audio files, video’s, etc. about Elvis are the most…simplistic.

Elvis bending down to speak to a child, Elvis posing with children sickened by Polio, Elvis willingly participating in supporting Cancer research, Elvis reaching down from the stage to hold a beautiful little blind girl while he Mothers arms reach up. I have always put great faith in the instinctual ability of children to be aware of other people’s intent and this “aura”.

Watching Elvis throughout his life gravitate towards children, stop what he was doing to spend time with them, to pose with pictures with them, and the intensity of the interaction between Elvis and children was – is – and forever will remain….priceless. It is a sincerity and a purity of heart that sadly is far too lacking in society today.

Elvis was not a “perfect person” by any means. That is not a slight against him it is just a fact. The only perfect person ever to walk this Earth ended up crucified on a cross after being beaten beyond recognition 21012 years ago.

I make this point because there should be a balance and a context when we speak about, or in this case write about, individuals and we should never manuever around the facts but embrace them for in doing so gives us an honest accord as well as a place of “agreement” in which to start honest debates.

Inasmuch as I am a diehard fan of Elvis I would trade it all in to spend just one moment with one of my loved ones who has died. I would trade it all in to be able to hold my children and to tell them I love them. For each child, I believe, is a blessing from God and that the day of their birth IS a special day for they, in whole and in part, are special.

To anyone who knew Elvis they would agree that Elvis would have gladly given up his fame, and fortune, if he could have his beloved Mother Gladys with him again. That is one of the reasons why I have been an “Elvis Fan” for these (approximately) six decades now. More important than the cakes, the wraped presents, or the location is the relationship while we are in each others presence and, equally as important, when we are not.

The wisdom of the saying of “the only time mankind can fully comprehend, and therefore manage, is the present”. So, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY # 77 Elvis”!

To Elvis Presley Fans Worldwide this is a bittersweet day but one worthy of celebration. The man was truly “one of a kind” and if the measure of a person is the intensity in which others care about them then Elvis, as he was in life, remains…the greatest.

Take care and may God bless you.
